Countdown to kickoff: Newman High School

Posted:

The Newman football team will open its season Friday against Thorp. The Cardinals will do so without one of their top players, but he's still finding a way to help his team win.
2012 was supposed to be Brody Lemke's year.
"He had a great track season last year and basketball and he was primed to have a great football season," said Newman head coach Paul Michlig.
Newman's top three running backs from 2011 had graduated, so as the Cardinals' top returner in the backfield, Lemke was primed for a breakout season.
On the very first play during the first day of contact practice, Brody's big year ended before it ever began.
"It was just a feeling that I was going to be back next couple of days, but then we went to the doctor and cracked bone."
Doctors found out the reason that bone cracked was from a tumor that had been developing in Brody's arm. The benign tumor weakened his bone and ultimately, ended his season.
"Those are days you don't want to be coaching almost because you feel for him so bad. Every time something like this happens, you go through it with him and it's gonna be tough."
"For me, it was devastating because I know how hard he worked in the weight room. He gave it his all."
And Brody admits, in the first few days after the injury, finding out his season was over was hard to swallow.
"It was emotionally hard at first, but I've kinda gotten over it. I just know what I have to do now."
Although he won't carry the football one time this season, he's found a new role with his team and will do everything he can to help them succeed.
"He's a leader and he's my assistant coach and it's still his team. It's how you deal with them and he's going to deal with them like a champ.
After watching from the sidelines this year, you can bet he'll be ready to go in 2013, his senior season.
"I'm going to be working twice as hard this offseason working for next year and I'm going to be twice as good as I was this year."
