
Most teams throughout northcentral Wisconsin kicked off the high school football season Friday, but a few games were decided Saturday afternoon.
In Schofield, Newman Catholic scored three times in the second quarter and stormed out to a 20-0 lead against Thorp.
Nick Janke led Newman with 123 yards receiving, Eric Bychinski added 114 yards and two touchdowns on the ground and Newman rolled to a 33-8 win.
In La Crosse, Pacelli opened the season against Aquinas and Jacob Feltz had a big day for the Cardinals.
Feltz finished with six catches for 143 yards and four touchdowns to lead Pacelli to a 28-20 win.
In Rhinelander, cross-country teams took to the course in the annual Hodag Invitational. Northland Pines' Devin Sauvola won the boys' individual title in 17 minutes, 18 seconds.
Wausau East won the boys' team title, while DC Everest was second.
On the girls' side, Three Lakes Natalie Miller took first individually and Wausau West brought home the team title.
It was a busy day on the volleyball court as several teams took part in the Menomonie Sprawl.
