JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) -

About 1,000 supporters of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have crammed into a Janesville high school gym. They're preparing to give Ryan a hometown send-off ahead of the Republican National Convention.

Many are wearing blue Romney-Ryan T-shirts. Several dozen are wearing foam cheeseheads that say Romney-Ryan on the side.

Ryan is expected to give brief remarks at the Monday rally.

The gym has an atmosphere of a pep rally. High school cheerleaders are lined up near the stage, and hand-painted signs stretch across the walls. Loudspeakers are blaring songs such as U2's "Where the Streets Have No Name," and Hall and Oates' "You Make My Dreams Come True."

About 40 protesters have gathered outside the school holding signs such as "Rep. Ryan: Not on my Side."
