Tango flourishes in finals of Argentine festival

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -

Couples from around the world are competing in the finals of Argentina's annual tango competition, the highlight of a two-week festival which this year honored Astor Piazzolla, the legendary composer who revived the genre and infuriated purists by blending tango with rock music in the 1970s.

Piazzolla died 20 years ago but tango is still growing in popularity as a unique form of music, poetry and dance.

A total of 357 pairs from 32 countries competed in the traditional Salon Tango competition, with 42 reaching Monday night's final.

The winners get $8,600 dollars in cash, along with the respect of tango fans worldwide.
