Outdoors with Lauren: Slaying Muskies

Posted:

Fishing guide experts Captain Matt Raley and Ben Michlig took me out just north of Minocqua, teaching me all the tricks on how to catch the high profile musky. "They'll strike at any point in the cast. A lot of time its going to be your first five cranks of the reel or your last five."

I was using an orange and black buck tail, and I began what would be hours and hours of casting. "Ten percent of the water, holds ninety percent of the fish, so you just gotta find that ten percent."

Just when I thought my arms were going to fall off from casting with no action, mother nature opened what's called a feeding window. "When you deal with muskies sometimes they're very moody. You have to base your action off of several different factors. Sunrise, sunset or moonrise or moon set."

Just when we saw that moon rising, everything changed. "You can spend a lot of hours of the day pounding away then all of a sudden boom hit a window and put a few fish in the water so it makes a hard day on the water well worth it."
