Steady improvement for Wisconsin banks


The majority of Wisconsin banks were profitable in the second quarter.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. shows 92% posted gains, the highest level in more than four years. A year earlier, 86% of banks were in the black. All but 22 of 271 state institutions posted a profit in the quarter ending June 30.

Seventy-one percent of Wisconsin banks had higher earnings compared to the first half of 2011. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel ( ) says Associated Bank of Green Bay ranks first in net income for the quarter at about $52 million.

The biggest loss in the quarter was $11 million at Guaranty Bank of Brown Deer.
