The Athens and Newman football teams entered Saturday 1-0, but the Blue Jays were the only ones still unbeaten at the end of the day after a 42-6 win at Stiehm Stadium.

The Cardinals struck first, thanks to a 70-yard pass play from Eric Bychinski to Marcus Gabriel, who was tackled at the Athens' 1-yard-line. On the next play, Bychinski punched it in to give Newman a 6-0 lead.

But it was all Athens after that. Michael Perkins gave the Blue Jays the lead with a short touchdown and Dalton Lavicks scored twice before the half to give Athens a 21-6 lead at the break.

The Blue Jays added three more scores in the second half to run away with the win.

The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team fell to St. Benedict, 3-1, in the Eau Claire invitational.

On the high school hardwood, the Merrill volleyball team won the DC Everest invitational with a 2-0 win over Wausau East in the championship match. Tomahawk finished 2-3 on the day, while the host Evergreens went 0-4.

Marshfield Columbus hosted its annual cross-country invitational and the teams from Minnesota dominated the day.

White Bear Lake's Bethany Wozak won the girls' race in 14 minutes, 40 seconds, while Connor Olsen form Wayzata took the boys' title.

Chequamegon won both the boys' and girls' division three titles.
