UPDATE: Another charged in Antigo drug investigation
ANTIGO (WAOW) -
It's been almost a year since the Langlade County Sheriff's department opened an investigation into a local drug ring.
Several local school district employees were charged in connection with the case and numerous others were questioned. But now, authorities say the head of the drug operation is behind bars.
"You can tell with the number of counts he is charged with that he is a major contributor to this investigation," Sheriff Bill Greening said.
John Hunter is the 15th person to be charged in connection with the investigation. According to court documents, Hunter was distributing marijuana and cocaine in Wausau, Antigo and the Bass Lake area of Langlade County.
But, investigators say this case has two parts.
"We wrapped up the marijuana side of the investigation," Sheriff Greening said. "Primarily this second side of the investigation involves cocaine."
Authorities say Hunter's arrest is the first step in that part of the investigation.
"We expect more charges to be filed and more people to be arrested as we continue to investigate," Greening explained.
As for Hunter, he faces 50 felony drug charges. His lawyer told the court his client has been cooperative with law enforcement and that should be factored into this case. His lawyer declined to comment further.
Another person has been charged in the Antigo drug investigation.
John Hunter, 34 of Antigo, was arrested over the weekend, according to police. Online court documents show Hunter faces 26 charges of manufacturing and delivering cocaine. In addition, he also faces 24 charges of delivering and manufacturing THC. THC is the main ingredient found in marijuana.
Hunter is the latest person charged in the drug investigation that spans several counties.
In November, several people were arrested after authorities say they were involved buying and selling marijuana. Three of them were former Antigo school district employees, while two others were involved in the Merrill school district.
In total 15 people have now been charged in connection with this drug investigation.
The Langlade county Sheriff tells Newsline 9 the investigation is still ongoing. He said he does expect more charges to be filed in the near future.
Hunter will appear in court this afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Stay tuned to Newsline 9 for the very latest on this developing story.
