Venezuelan rival challenges Hugo Chavez to debate

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -

Venezuelan opposition leader Henrique Capriles is challenging President Hugo Chavez to debate the country's problems in the final month of campaigning for the October presidential election.

Capriles says he wants to debate issues like education, health care and crime. In his words, "we're going to debate wherever they wish."

Chavez said in a campaign speech Friday that he wishes the country had a "serious, responsible opposition" in order to be able to debate with its leaders. The leftist president says his rival represents the interests of the wealthy and the right wing.

Chavez is running for another six-year term in the Oct. 7 vote and is expected to face the toughest re-election contest of his nearly 14-year-old presidency.
