Racing fans packed State Park Speedway in Rib Mountain Saturday. It was the first day of the racing season and a chance for fans to remember racing icon, Dick Trickle. A different way to fuel your car is available in the Wausau area.
A compressed natural gas pump has opened at a BP station at 4600 Rib Mountain Drive. Leaders with Trillium CNG say it's part of a push to build infrastructure to support vehicles that run on natural gas.
Natural gas is cheaper than regular gas. The equivalent of a gallon is selling for $2.07 at the Wausau station, much less money than regular fuel. But experts say CNG may not be for everyone.
"You'll going to be spending more for the vehicle," said Charles Koontz, Trillium CNG vice president for commercial services. But, he added, "you're going to be making money by saving on the fuel. So it really makes the most sense for people who use their vehicles and drive a lot of miles, use a lot of gallons."
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, there are about 1,100 compressed natural gas stations in the country, and 26 of them are in Wisconsin.
