Judge to consider tossing Wis. wolf hunt lawsuit

Posted:
MADISON (AP) -

A judge is set to consider whether to throw out a lawsuit challenging the use of dogs in this winter's wolf hunt.

A group of humane societies filed the lawsuit last month alleging the Department of Natural Resources failed to restrict dog training and use in the hunt. The group contends the lack of restrictions will lead to deadly dog-wolf encounters.

Dane County Circuit Judge Peter C. Anderson issued a temporary injunction last week blocking dog training for wolves and using dogs in the hunt.

The DNR has asked Anderson to dismiss the lawsuit. The agency argues dog use doesn't cause the humane societies harm and a prohibition runs counter to legislation that allows hunters to use dogs.

Anderson is expected to consider the DNR's request during a hearing Friday.
