Top 5 plays of the week

The fall sports season has already reached its halfway point and with another week in the books, it's time to take a look back at the top five high school plays of the week.

Number five, Wausau East's Justin Strom makes a great pass to Zang Chang and Chang puts it in. The Lumberjacks would beat Merrill 6-1 and improve to 7-0 in Wisconsin Valley Conference play.

We hit the gridiron for our number four play. Crandon stayed unbeaten on the year thanks to a strong performance from Hayden Krueger and plays like this. Krueger picks up 26 yards, but runs about 80. Going east to west and dodging defenders. That run led to a touchdown and Crandon beat Laona-Wabeno 40-21.

At number three, the Stevens Point boys' cross country team is ranked first in the state and it took a top-ranked performance to win Saturday's Smiley Invitational in Wausau. Several of the Panthers runners took a wrong turn and fell out of the lead pack, but they overcame the confusion to win the Smiley Invite division one title by 16 points.

Number t, Stevens Point taking on Fond du Lac. Panthers quarterback Eric Zelhofer takes advantage of some great blocking, finds his way to the sideline and is off…65 yards to the endzone. But hold on, a holding penalty is called.

No worries though, later in the game, Zelhofer running the same play, opposite side this time and it worked once, no doubt will Zelhofer make it work again.

He finds his way back to the endzone. That would prove to be a crucial T-D as SPASH wins 28-21.

We have a trio of plays at number one…it was a big night for special teams play Friday. First up, Loyal's Dylan Much fields the safety kick and busts it down the sideline, stays on his feet and takes it in for the score. Loyal beat Thorp 69-8.

Next up, Athens' Craig Boyd fields the punt, goes all the way across the field to the far side and is off down the sideline, 65 yards for the score. Athens rolls past Assumption 49-0.

Finally, Tommy Schuh playing in his first game of the season for Owen-Withee and Schuh shows that he is not rusty one bit. Schuh fields the kickoff at the three…heads toward the middle of the field and cuts back to the sideline and is off! 97 yards when all is said and done.

Owen Withee gets a big win over Greenwood-Granton 30-16
