Wausau road project promises bike lanes, smoother ride
People in Wausau got a closer look Wednesday at a new road project.
The project will renovate Stewart Avenue. Bike lanes are planned between 1st Avenue and 17th Avenue. The project also includes replacing old sewer inlets and getting new curbing and sidewalk on part of Scott Street.
Transportation officials answered questions about the project at a meeting Wednesday at Wausau City Hall. They say the project will make a big difference for drivers.
"The primary benefit is going to be ride quality," said Michael Grage of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. "Right now the ride is very poor out there as I'm sure you've noticed. The joints have deteriorated greatly, the roadway surface has deteriorated. When we're done, you'll have a nice smooth surface through there."
Construction on the project is scheduled for 2015. It's estimated to cost around $2 million.
