Welding school grand opening on Saturday

A new welding school is about to open in Eagle River.

The grand opening of the Advanced Welding Institute is on Saturday. It has room for 15 students this semester, but so far only 8 have enrolled. Still, school officials say they hope to fill a few more spots before Monday.

They're preparing, setting up and straightening things out, as months of planning unravels in just two days.

"We're getting ready for our big open house on Saturday," said AWI Director, Brian Scheid.

Kade Kyhos is enrolled at the school and is ready to get started.

"I'm excited because I'm helping the guys get the school ready," said AWI student Kade Kyhos.

The school offers a 6 month program with a lot of hands on practice in the welding booths, and some class time.

"The thing that drew me in the most would be the amount of time we get in the booths,"said Kyhos.

Kyhos is one of 8 students in the program so far. But there's still room for seven more. Still, school officials say that's more than they planned for.

"We're above average for what we thought we would be for our first class, we're happy with the 8," said Scheid.

But, he says attracting more students would be ideal. He hopes some potential welders will stop by the grand opening celebration on Saturday.

"There's so many jobs in welding right now, the number keeps growing for pipeline jobs and manufacturing jobs," said Scheid.

And school leaders say this program will help students get ready to grab those jobs and succeed in a growing field.

Classes start on Monday. The open house takes place this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m..
