LANGLADE COUNTY (WAOW) -
Living in northern Wisconsin often gives us the chance to get up close and personal with the animals who co-exist with us. Usually those encounters depend upon being in the right place at the right time. When it comes to seeing a moose Antigo is the right place to be as one man found out a couple of weeks ago.
"This is the first time we've seen it. It's causing quite a stir in the Langlade County area now," said Doug Below of Antigo. Below is an avid outdoorsman and when he heard about the "moose on the loose" near airport he grabbed his video camera.
"She just sat there chewing her cud in the tater field, havin' a good old time."
When the moose comes out crowds often gather. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has had to send out wardens to make sure no one gets too close. "Observe it don't get to close. It causes stress for the animal when you get too close," said wildlife biologist Chuck McCullough.
They are after all wild animals and unpredictable but so far this one seems right at home. "It's been in the flats and the fields and walked over there to the and walked over here and to the airport and the neighbor across the street," Below noted.
What the moose didn't know is his neighbor is a taxidermist. But moose are protected animals and DNR biologists believe their arrival here is the result of restocking efforts in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. "They are filtering out and the and that's why we are seeing there," said McCullough.
DNR estimates place fewer than 40 moose in Wisconsin, so sightings of the amazing animals are rare though viewers throughout the Northwoods have sent in pictures and video of recent moose sightings.
