Wisconsin educators learn about new green initiative in schools

Posted:

Educators from around Wisconsin were in Wausau Tuesday, learning about a new Green & Healthy Schools initiative.

Miron Construction hosted the event.

It focused on ways for school districts to earn the U.S. Department of Education's Green Ribbon recognition.

It also helps shape the state's core content for Green & Healthy School education for the next two years.

"We are launching the new application on the new certification process next week on the first, so this is really the training to say okay, this is the new certification process," says Victoria Rydberg, an Environmental Education Consultant for the Department of Public Instruction. "Now, when we do start this certification process over the next two years, what do we need to improve for this training session?"

The training focuses on a variety of subjects -- including energy, water, environmental health, transportation, and sustainability education.

Schools have until January to apply for the new recognition.
