STEVENS POINT (WAOW) -
Each Thursday, the Place of Peace sees many hungry
people. But the building will soon be torn down.
"We're scrambling to find a new home," Evergreen
Community Initiatives Vice Chair Joel Besemer said.
They have to be out by Oct. 31. But need to find a
new location before then.
"I don't want to say we're in danger, because I think
we'll find a way, we always find a way," Besemer said.
The owners of the Place of Peace's current building
are demolishing it. The electricity, plumbing, heating and roof all have major
issues.
"It's no longer viable or safe," Besemer said.
The location is also home to a food pantry—something else
that will have to move.
"We need a space where we can continue to do what we're
already doing and to expand in the ways we want to, to keep loving on the
community around us," Besemer said.
Organizers say that means they either need a new
building or a space with low rent.
"To keep Place of Peace going, we need it for maybe
2-3 hours every Thursday night," Besemer said,
So, the Place of Peace is quickly trying to find a
solution. Organizers say they'd appreciate any help or donations.
"We need to raise either $5,000 for rent next year or
someone in the community sitting on a building can either donate it or let us
use it once a week to keep this going," Besemer said.
And they hope they'll be able to get this over with
soon, so they can get back to serving.
