Thousands gather for 48th annual Beef-A-Rama event

Sizzling grills and crazy costumes filled the streets of Minocqua on Saturday.

"This is probably one of the biggest events that we have in the fall," said Minocqua Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kim Baltus.

Beef-A-Rama is a celebration of food and fall.

"The event is really an opportunity, it began as an opportunity for us to thank all of our summer guests for spending time in the Northwoods," said Baltus.

It's become a destination, as thousands of people headed to Downtown Minocqua for the true "Beef-A-Rama" experience.

"It's comical you know, everybody dressing up and you know, carrying their rump roast in downtown Minocqua," said Patrick Richardson.

Organizers said this is the biggest crowd yet and they have high hopes for sales.

"To sell 4,000 sandwiches and to sell out of all of our Beef-A-Rama attire," said Baltus.

Sandwiches sold fast and people at the event said they didn't mind waiting in line for a taste.

"The merchants are competing for it, so it's like the best rump roast you can have," said Elizabeth Watson.

City leaders said Beef-A-Rama provides a big boost to the area economy.

"This gives another shot in the arm to the economy in the Northwoods and allows people to spend time enjoying themselves at a lovely fall festival," said Baltus.

Whether manning the grill or wearing a costume, everyone agreed, the event was all about the beef.

"A celebration of beef," said Watson.

Certainly a tasty celebration to end the summer season in the Northwoods.

Organizers said they expected about 15,000 people to attend this year's Beef-A-Rama event.
