STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football dropped its home and Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener to UW-La Crosse in the final seconds of regulation Saturday, 19-16.
Trailing 16-13 with 16 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, Eagle running back Jared Stan ran for a three-yard touchdown to give UWL the win.
The game-winning drive stayed alive when the Eagles (2-2, 1-0 WIAC) earned a first down by the nose of the ball on fourth-and-short from the Pointers' 25-yard line
The Pointers (1-3, 0-1 WIAC) grabbed a 3-0 lead when their first possession of the game resulted in a 35-yard field goal by Jesse Vervelde (Oostburg, WI/Oostburg).
UWL claimed a 6-3 lead on its ensuing possession when Ben Hertampf ran for a 19-yard touchdown. The extra point sailed wide right.
Mitch Beau (Fon du Lac, WI/St. Mary Springs) connected with Theo Maglio (Wautoma, WI/Wautoma) for a 29-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter to put UWSP back on top, 10-6.
Jake Welch sprinted for a 36-yard touchdown run to put the Eagles back on top 13-10, but Valverde nailed a 33-yard field goal as time expired in the first half, tying the game at 13-13.
Valvered recorded his third field goal of the game early in the third quarter, but it was the only points UWSP could muster in the second half. Stan's game-winning touchdown accounted for the Eagles' only second-half points.
Pointer wide out Theo Maglio (Wautoma, WI/Wautoma) finished the game with 201 yards receiving on eight catches. It's the first time a Pointer has finished with 200-plus receiving yards since Jared Jenkins came down 243 yards against UW-Eau Claire in 2009.
Beau completed 21 of 36 pass attempts for 302 yards and a touchdown.
Marc Young (Detroit, MI/Soutfield-Lathrup) caught a team-high nine passes for 52 yards.
Ethan Lockhart (Elkhorn, WI/Elkhorn) carried the ball 26 times for 106 yards – the second time he has eclipsed the century mark this season.
Cody Seibel (Kewauskum, WI/Kewauskum) led the Pointer defense with a season-high 17 tackles (12 solo, five assisted) and 2.5 sacks, marking the third time this year Seibel has led UWSP in tackles.
The Pointers travel to Menomonie on Saturday, Oct. 6, for a WIAC matchup with UW-Stout. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
