Lincoln Co authorities are calling on the community for help

TOMAHAWK (WAOW) -

A closed sign still hangs on the front door at Statton's General Store in Lincoln County.

"They broke through this window here," Store owner Richard Statton points out as he looks at the front window.

When Statton opened up shop early Tuesday morning he was not prepared for what he saw.

"You never hope it happens to you but here we are, trying to catch up with someone who did it," Statton said.

Lincoln County Sheriff's officers say someone broke into the front window, smashed a glass case and stole almost $10,000 in handguns.

"A a lot of these firearms are usually stolen because they're looking for drug money or quick money," Lt. Mark Gartmann said. "And in this economy you could possibly see this more and more."

That's why officers are asking the public for help.

"Individuals who know the area, who travel the area who might have saw a car coming out of the business at a suspicious time, those are the kinds of things that we need," Lt. Gartmann said.

Since Tuesday, Statton and his family have been going through everything, trying to piece together exactly what was taken.

"We have to be accountable for every single one," Statton said.

They say the hardest part is making sure it doesn't happen again.

"We knew we were a target," Statton explained. "But now we will just add more layers to make sure we aren't easy to rob."

For now though, the big focus is cleaning up the mess.

"We'll get everything together."

But he, and officers hope someone will come forward. So, whoever did this can be held accountable.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's department is asking anyone with information to contact them. That number is (715) 536-6272
