Plows drivers train for first snow fall

Snow plows aren't doing much yet, but soon they will be hitting the streets. Wausau Public Works officials cleared the dust off plows Wednesday.

Plow drivers got to work for a rodeo. It's basically an obstacle course for plows. Drivers weaved around cones, turns and barrels in the parking lot of the Public Works building.

They even had to do the course backwards--getting ready for anything Mother Nature might throw their way this winter.

It all seems like a lot of fun, but there's a very serious safety lesson here.

"By going through this course it teaches them and refreshes them—it's very important for their safety and the public's safety," said Don Skare, Wausau Street Superintendent.

Later Wednesday, the plows hit the streets of Wausau to map out their upcoming routes.

It wasn't just for practice--the winner of the race got an extra vacation day.

But the employees say they're ready for the next snow fall--one that will actually stick.
