Garrett Schmelling is the mold for the perfect student-athlete. The Merrill senior competes in cross country and wrestling for the blue jays. He's successful on both teams.
This fall Garrett is getting attention for being one of the top runners in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. "It's a big deal to me. I've got some great teammates out there that I'm competing with everyday at practice. It's nice to be the top runner for Merrill but to know that I'm being looked at as one of the better runners in the area, that's a nice feeling," Schmelling said.
Originally Garrett joined the cross country team simply to get in shape for the wrestling season. Once he started to experience some success, his mindset on the sport changed dramatically "It's definitely been a good time and I've definitely gotten in shape for wrestling but now I've had a little bit of individual success and the team's had some success. It's taken my motivation to the next level and given me a reason to come out and work hard everyday".
Schmelling's wrestling success is definitely apparent. On the mats, Garrett has reached the conference finals as well as sectionals throughout his Merrill career. In the off season, he has been crowned a freestyle state champion and also wrestled for Team Wisconsin. But coach cross country coach Craig Hoffman says that Garrett's character is what stands out the most. "He's easy to coach. He's the most coachable person I've come across. It's nice to have someone like that. He's an encourager, he's the eternal optimist. It speaks well for himself and it's rubbed off on the team," said Hoffman.
His success isn't just limited to athletics. Garrett has a 4.0 GPA and is in the running to be class valedictorian. He says that getting good grades has always been extremely important to him.
