Diabetes walk in Stevens Point raises more than $70,000

A walk was held Saturday in Stevens Point to help fund research and provide support for people with diabetes.

More than 500 people participated in the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) Walk to Cure diabetes.

It was held at Pfiffner Park in Stevens Point.

Organizers say it's a chance to connect with others and increase awareness of the disease.

Julie Kersten/JDRF Northeast Wisconsin Executive Director: "We had a lot of new people out here today and that just makes, it really makes me happy to know that more and more people know that JDRF is out there and what we're doing."

Organizers hoped to raise $50,000.  Kersten says they reached $70,000.

Newsline 9's Bryon Graff and Emily Neubauer participated in the event as well.
