Empty bowls help feed the hungry

The 11th annual Empty Bowls event kicked off in Stevens Point on Saturday afternoon.

The fundraiser featured hundreds of hand painted bowls from community members. Those bowls were filled with 30 different kinds of soup, brought by area restaurants.

Organizers said they hope to raise $25,000 to help local families in need.

"Pulling together and recognizing that there are people in need and that their little bit they can do by attending, bringing a friend, bringing family, raises awareness about hunger and helps other families that are in need," said Coordinator Laurie Rockman.

Organizers said nearly 1,000 people took part in the event.

This year's event featured "Empty Bowls To Go" which allowed people to drive through for soup and still help the cause.
