Wisconsin Rapids officer issued citation after crash

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) -

The Wood County Sheriff's Department says the Wisconsin Rapids officer involved in a crash has been issued a citation.

Authorities say 23-year-old Douglas Vanberkel was traveling too fast to safely negotiate the curve on 3rd Avenue near 1st Avenue.

Sheriff's department officials says Vanberkel was issued a citation for unreasonable and imprudent speed.

Investigators say Vanberkel was on his way to help a Nekoosa officer Saturday, when he lost control and slammed into a wall.

The officer was taken by medical helicopter to St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield but is now home recovering from his injuries.
