Glance: A look at unusual NYSE closings

The New York Stock Exchange planned a rare shutdown Monday because of Hurricane Sandy. The last time the NYSE closed down for a weather-related event was on Sept. 27, 1985, for Hurricane Gloria. Here's a look at other unusual NYSE closings throughout history.

Aug. 8 1885: Funeral of former President Ulysses S. Grant

Mar. 12-13, 1888: Blizzard of 1888

Nov. 25, 1899: Funeral of Vice-President Garret A. Hobart

Feb. 2, 1901: Funeral of Queen Victoria of England

Sept. 14, 1901: Death of President William McKinley

Nov. 2, 1912: Funeral of Vice-President James S. Sherman

July 31-Nov. 27, 1914: Closed pending outbreak of World War I

June 5, 1917: Draft Registration Day

Aug. 4, 1917: Closed due to heat

Jan. 28, 1918, Feb. 4, 1918, Feb. 11, 1918: Heatless days to preserve fuel during the war

Nov. 11, 1918: Armistice signed

Aug. 3, 1923: Death of President Warren G. Harding

Aug. 10, 1923: Funeral of President Warren G. Harding at Marion, Ohio

Jan. 7, 1933: Funeral of former President Calvin Coolidge.

Aug. 15-16, 1945: V-J Day. End of World War II

May 25, 1946: Railroad strike

Nov. 25, 1963: Funeral of President John F. Kennedy.

Apr. 9, 1968: National Day of Mourning for Martin Luther King, Jr.

Feb. 10, 1969: Closed due to heavy snow.

July 21, 1969: Closed - National Day of Participation for the lunar exploration

Mar. 31, 1969: Closed. Funeral of former President Dwight D. Eisenhower

July 14, 1977: Closed due to blackout in New York City

Sept. 27, 1985: Closed due to Hurricane Gloria

Apr. 27, 1994: Closed for funeral of former President Richard M. Nixon.

Sept. 11-14, 2001: Closed following the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center
