Catholic Central swept Newman in the girls' volleyball division four state championship game at the Resch Center in Green Bay, 25-15, 25-18, 25-22.
The loss stopped the Fighting Cardinals' 15-game winning streak and ended Newman's perfect record in postseason play. The Fighting Cardinals had not dropped a single game throughout the playoffs.
"I mean we're fighters. That's how we've always been," Newman senior outside hitter Abby Brown said as she fought back tears following the loss.
"And we just really wanted to fight til the end because this was it."
Newman nearly took a set from the Hilltoppers, taking a 22-21 lead in the third set. But that was as close as the Fighting Cardinals got as Catholic Central won three straight points to claim its second straight title.
"We had an awesome season and you couldn't ask for a better ending than this," Newman junior middle hitter Shaefer Rupar said.
"We're just losing a lot of seniors this year and it's hard to lose that many and every time a season ends, its tough."
This is the second time in five years Newman finishes the season as the state runner-up. The Fighting Cardinals placed second in 2009.
Newman ends the 2012 season with a 29-11 record.
