Local business owners hope to jumpstart shopping season

The holidays are quickly approaching and that means it's time to start finding the perfect gifts.

Local businesses on Wausau's west side were getting a head start on Saturday.

"That's what we really wanted people to understand, that there is another unique area and it's the west side downtown district," said Tom Passow.

Businesses on First Avenue are holding an open house tour this weekend to encourage shoppers to start thinking about their holiday lists.

Nancy Danielson was one of those shoppers.

She was in Wausau visiting family and when she heard about the event, she knew she couldn't pass it up.

"We can't get Packers items at home, so this is great," said Danielson.

It didn't take much to get her into the shopping spirit.

"When I started the car this morning, the song was "Hey Big Spender", so I figured that was my motivation to come down and have a good time," said Danielson.

Kathy Anderson was tagging along for the fun.

She said the shops have items she couldn't find anywhere else.

"I think that the west side here sometimes gets forgotten and it shouldn't be because these are really unique shops," said Anderson.

Business owners said it's a great chance to remind people, they're here.

"A lot of people are discovering stores that they hadn't seen before, probably wouldn't normally come into, but now through word of mouth, they'll be able to get out a little information for us," said Dion Starck.
