Performance of the Dow Jones industrial average by party controlling the White House, listed with presidents in office, since 1900:

- 1901-1912 (Republican - McKinley, T. Roosevelt, Taft): Up 48.3 percent.

- 1913-1920 (Democratic - Wilson): Up 29.2 percent.

- 1921-1932 (Republican - Harding, Coolidge, Hoover): Down 24.5 percent.

- 1933-1952 (Democratic - F. Roosevelt, Truman): Up 318.4 percent.

- 1953-1960 (Republican - Eisenhower): Up 121.2 percent.

- 1961-1968 (Democratic - Kennedy, Johnson): Up 58.3 percent.

- 1969-1976 (Republican - Nixon, Ford): Up 2.1 percent.

- 1977-1980 (Democratic - Carter): Down 3 percent.

- 1981-1992 (Republican - Reagan, G.H.W. Bush): Up 247 percent.

- 1993-2000 (Democratic - Clinton): Up 236.7 percent.

- 2001-2008 (Republican - G.W. Bush): Down 12.1 percent.

- 2009-2012 (Democratic - Obama): Up 36.2 percent through Tuesday.
