Wood County voter turnout

WOOD COUNTY (WAOW) -

According to the Wood County Clerk, voter turnout was high yesterday.

She says 87 percent of registered voters in the county cast a ballot.

That's about 39 thousand people.

Voter turnout was up from 80 percent in 2008.

The clerk says she thinks Wisconsin's status as a battleground state may have contributed to the spike in voter turnout.

"It was a close race throughout the whole campaign and we did have close races in our Assembly districts. There's two Assembly district races that are still quite close in Wood County," said Cindy Cepress, Wood County Clerk.

Cepress says many people voted early and cast absentee ballots, but there were also many new voters registering at the polls.
