WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) -
Election Day may be over, but there may be some recounts
in central Wisconsin.
One of the recounts could come in the 70th Assembly
District.
Republican Nancy VanderMeer trails incumbent Democrat Amy
Sue Vruwink by 168 votes.
VanderMeer's campaign says she wants to see the results
from the official canvass before making a decision about a recount.
In the 72nd Assembly District, a Wisconsin
Rapids firefighter is thinking about asking for a recount.
Unofficial results from Tuesday's election show Justin
Pluess trails Republican State Representative Scott Krug by just 114 votes.
"I guess I was surprised, given the amount of turnout,
that it was that close," said Cindy Cepress, Wood County Clerk.
Still – incumbent Scott Krug is confident.
"Well, we know that we've won this race," said Krug.
Krug's razor thin lead has left Democrat Justin Pluess considering
asking for a recount.
"There isn't an exact closure to this election yet, so it's
kind of a little nerve-wracking, and you know, there's a difference between a
winning campaign and a successful campaign, and so far, I feel like our
campaign was very successful," said Pluess.
But Krug does not think a recount will change the results
of this election.
"So, the anxiety is gone and all the things that go along
with waiting for the numbers to come in. You'll see one or two here change, but
you're not going to see a huge 114 vote swing. So, I feel 99.99 percent confident
that the results will stand," said Krug.
The margin separating the candidates is less than half of
a percent, which means that Pluess would not have to pay for a recount.
The Wood County Clerk says recounts don't happen often
for Assembly races.
"We do a very good job in the accuracy of our vote
counting. Our machines are very accurate. It's when you throw humans into the
mix that you can be off by a little bit here or there," said Cepress.
Pluess says he will wait until the final canvassing is finished
to decide whether to request a recount.
The Wood County Clerk says they have until November 20
to finish the official canvass of the vote.
