Three local veterans got a huge surprise at a moving ceremony in Tomahawk on Monday.
They found out they'll be taking a special trip to the nation's capital, all thanks to students at the Tomahawk Elementary School.
The students raised $1,500 dollars to send those veterans on the Never Forgotten Honor Flight.
They raised the money by collecting spare change through a nickel war.
Two of those veterans who will be taking the Honor Flight, served in World War II, the other served in the Korean War.
The students said they were excited for the chance to thank their veteran heroes face to face.
"I thought that it was great that we're honoring people that protect our country and make it a better place to live on," said Richelle Swann.
The event was held at the Tomahawk School auditorium, where students shared thanks with songs, music from the band and presentations.
Teachers said the idea started after students learned about the Honor Flight and the significance of the trip for local veterans.
The three veterans honored today, will take their flight next Spring.
Scattered showers to continue the next few days.
