MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW) -
Many stores in central Wisconsin held special promotions during the first weekend of gun-deer season. Retailers said it's a great time to shop if you aren't heading out into the woods.
Nice as New in Wausau celebrated with a "75 percent off Orange Tag Sale." Assistant Manager Tana Hunter said the store usually holds a sale during the hunting season.
"It's a very busy time for us right now but it's great. The sales are going great," she said. Hunter told Newsline 9 a lot of women headed to the store Saturday to shop while their husbands and boyfriends hunted.
Kimberly Klessig of Merrill is one of them.
"We do it every year," Klessig said. She said there are some good deals and often you get first pick of items before Black Friday shopping begins.
Meantime, some area jewelers offered discounts to try and get shoppers in the door.
"A lot of women go out shopping this weekend for hunter's widows weekend," Jim Kryshak Jewelers Sales Manager Tara Smith said.
The store tied the first weekend of hunting in with their 50th anniversary.
"50 percent of our store is 50 percent off," Smith said. She added that interest this year has been overwhelming with both men and women heading to the jewelry store.
Many local retailers plan to offer special hunting season deals through the week.
