Oneida County Sheriff announces retirement

ONEIDA COUNTY (WAOW) -

After 38 years of service, Oneida County Sheriff Jeff Hoffman announced he is retiring.

His last day will be December 14, 2012.

Sheriff Hoffman started his law enforcement career in December of 1974 and was appointed to Sheriff in 2005.   Hoffman was elected twice and is currently serving a term of office that ends in January of 2015.

In a statement, Sheriff Hoffman said, "it has been a privilege and an honor to serve the citizens for 38 years. Oneida County has had a tradition of strong law enforcement and providing good service to our citizens. I was very privileged during my career to have been mentored by four Sheriff's, Jack Phillips, Penny Drivas, Charlie Crofoot, and Tim Miller. I also had the opportunity to work with and learn from many other law enforcement professionals such as Chief Deputy George Doucette, Chief Deputy Robert Conquest, Chief Deputy Jack Bergman, Captain Ray Zastrow, Lt. John Boyer, Lt. Tom Hageny, and many other Sergeants and Investigators and other law enforcement professionals. Just like these fine officers, I hope I left my mark on the Oneida County Sheriff's Office and I trust those now in leadership roles will continue the strong heritage of professionalism and integrity. I am proud of the current staff and their abilities. I am very confident that this will be a smooth transition and all members of my Office will step up and continue to provide the people of Oneida County with the high standards of public safety service that they are accustomed to. I look forward to spending some time with my family and moving on to the next chapter of my life".

Chief Deputy John Sweeney will take on the interim role as Sheriff until a replacement is found.
