Gun-deer hunting season comes to a close in Wisconsin - WAOW - Newsline 9, Wausau News, Weather, Sports

Sunday is the final day of the gun-deer season here in Wisconsin.

Saturday night's snow was a welcome sight for hunters, DNR officials said the deer are more active when it's cold.

But workers said it was a slow day at registration stations across the area, as hunters stayed in the woods as long as possible.

Employees who helped register hunters said that's because of the weather earlier in the week.

"It's been slow with the warm weather that we've had. I haven't seen a whole lot come in this past week. I know earlier in the week there was quite a few, or a lot more going on as far as deer coming in to be registered, but lately this week it's been slow," said Steven Meshak.

The DNR said more than 600,000 hunters participated in this year's hunt and some in the Marathon County area had success in the woods this season.

"Overall between my wife and I, we did see more deer, we heard more shooting for sure and more deer were taken," said Dave Miller.

Dave Miller has been hunting for 48 years. His wife bagged a doe on Sunday.

He said although the weather this year wasn't as ideal as in the past, overall it was still a great season.
