Special Olympics Bowling event brings competition to Weston

WESTON (WAOW) -

There was a lot of friendly competition taking place on the lanes.

"I got an 88 in my first game, I'm working on a 77 right now," said Lori Schwede.

Lori Schwede is one of several hundred athletes that competed at Dale's Weston Lanes.

"We practice very hard and it takes about 5 months out of the year to bowl," said Schwede.

She said the Special Olympics bring her closer to her family and new friends.

"If I have a competition somewhere else, they're there too, and I have a friend from Rhinelander, she bowled in Eau Claire and I met up with her there," said Schwede.

Schwede has participated in these events since she was 8 years old and it's something her mother said has been life changing.

"Their confidence just grows and and it shows that they can do it, they want to do it, they want to prove that they can do it," said Sue Schwede.

She said it also makes her a better athlete.

"They can get out there and just really prove, I mean she bowls better than I do," said Schwede.

Organizers said these events are all about bringing people together and making a difference.

"Today is a celebration of all of their achievements and we hand out awards and it's just such a fun place to be," said Kristina Rozenbergs.

Family members said events like this, do just that.

"It makes them feel normal, like they're a part of it, like everybody else," said Schwede.

Making a difference, one strike at a time.
