WAUSAU (WAOW) -
We've received more than one hundred comments about the role concealed carry played in a recent case in Marathon County.
The majority says it's the perfect example of why the law exists, but others still have concerns.
It's been more than a year since Governor Scott Walker signed concealed carry into law. Now, this most recent case has brought the debate to the foreground in Wausau.
The driver in this case told dispatch he had a firearm. He told police he felt his life threatened and used the gun to hold the suspects. Advocates of the law say that's exactly what it's for.
"People are trained to use them to protect themselves. That's the whole idea that the law is about," Frederick Prehn, owner of Central Wisconsin Firearms said.
Many agree. More than one hundred people sounded off on our Facebook, and the overwhelming majority says they support the law and cases like this that put it to use.
Others are not so sure. People I spoke with didn't want to talk on camera. But they told me there are still doubts surrounding concealed carry and guns in our community.
As for law enforcement, opinions vary.
"Some officers don't like it because it adds more weapons to scenes. Other officers support it because they believe people should have the ability to protect themselves before we're able to get there and help them," Deputy Chief Bryan Hilts with the Wausau Police Department said.
Despite the law being in effect for more than a year, the debate rages on. But for those that support concealed carry, they say this is a textbook example of how it should work.
