Rookies break in ice at new curling center

The new multi-million dollar curling center in Wausau was open for its first public event Saturday.

Curling club leaders say about 120 people helped break in eight Olympic sized sheets of ice during a rookie clinic.

The curling center is about half-way finished. Leaders said the locker rooms viewing area are completed, butconstructionn on several other areas still needs to be completed.

However, project organizers said they couldn't be more excited to see athletes curling in the new facility.

"It's just great to see the total support from the community, curlers and non-curlers, that have gotten behind this project," Wausau Curling Club President Corey Sandquist said.

They hope to have construction on the curling center completed by January, as several tournaments are scheduled after the start of 2013.
