Organization gives away 500 turkeys to area veterans

WAUSAU (WAOW) -

A local organization handed out turkeys to veterans for Christmas meals.

For the fourth year in a row, the Man of Honor Society gave away 500 turkeys to veterans and active military members in Marathon County.

It all took place at the VFW post in Wausau.

Organizers said the event started as a way to thank veterans for their service.

"I think it's very important for the veterans to know that there are people behind them to support them and thank them for what they have done," said Jim Fust.

Organizers said the total cost of all the turkeys was about $8,000 dollars.

They said this year's turn out was larger than last year's and they expect to hand out even more turkeys next year.
