When you think of the Salvation Army, chances are you think about the holiday bell ringing campaigns. Those campaigns provide toys and holiday food baskets for the needy. But the money raised during the holiday season goes to fund programs year round.
The Hope Center in Stevens Point is a homeless shelter run through the Salvation Army. It offers three meals a day and offers shelter to individuals and families. Director of Operations, Bob Quam says, "We help about 400 people a year. That translates into 12,000 bed nights a year. We also serve about 23,000 meals a year."
Much of the money raised through Red Kettle campaigns in Portage County goes to help the Hope Center. Organizers are looking to find more volunteers to ring the bell this holiday season. Their goal is $125,000. Volunteers who want to sign up can go to www.ringbells.org.
