Whooping cough cases confirmed in Marathon County

Health officials say several cases of whooping cough have been confirmed this month in Marathon County.

According to the Marathon County Health Department one of those cases was confirmed Friday afternoon at Horace Mann Middle School in Wausau.  The school is closed for winter break, but parents received an automated voice message warning them about the case.

Health officials say it's a contagious illness and can be most harmful to infants.

"If you have a prolonged cough illness you should not spend time around infants because they are the population that we are most concerned about and we don't want you to spread it to them," said Ruth Marx, an epidemiologist at the Marathon County Health Department.

Wisconsin has the nation's highest rate of whopping cough cases.
