Group offers free bus rides to celebrate return of service to Weston
Bus service is back in Weston, and for one day, passengers are riding for free.
On Wednesday morning, bus advocates invited the public to the Downtown Wausau Metroride Station to "Celebrate the Bus."
Thanks to a task force made up of the bus advocates, anyone can ride the K route for free. That route runs down Schofield Avenue and onto Camp Phillips Road.
"Our committee decided to foot the bill for anyone who wanted to ride the bus today with the hopes that people who, like myself, aren't bus riders, might hop on the bus and see what the bus is all about," said Jean Abreu, the task force chairman.
Wednesday marked the first time the route has run since last January.
The road to bring back bus service has been a bumpy one. Weston residents voted in June to bring the service back. But then they defeated a referendum to pay for it.
Weston leaders were able to come up with a compromise to fund the bus service.
