Athlete of the Week: SPASH's Sheldon Harn

Most students were in class on the first day back from holiday break.

But Sheldon Harn was busy with his pen.

"It is nice to just pick a team and be able to know who I'm running for," Harn said. "Know where I'm going to college and to pick my major."

The SPASH senior has committed to attend Viterbo university in La Crosse next fall, joining the V-Hawks track and field team as a hurdler.

Harn's future coach says Harn is more than just a successful athlete.

"He's a student that has grown and developed into a leader here at his high school," Viterbo track and field coach John Metelko said. "And I know he can be a leader at our college team in the future too."

"When you all of a sudden start getting good times and you start to progress, it feels great to actually have coaches talking to you," Harn said. "And have people interested in having you as an athlete."

Harn will join a relatively young team that has existed for just three years. But running at Viterbo is a dream he's had since he was a sophomore.

"I kind of wanted to be involved in starting the program, seeing if I can make them higher up on the list, win a conference title or something like that," Harn said.

For now, Harn says he'll focus on breaking school records and becoming a conference champion in his final season at SPASH.
