WAUSAU (WAOW) -
Some tenants have already moved into the newly renovated Federal Building. It has been transformed into one, two and three bedroom loft-style apartments.
Many of the original features of the building have been preserved, including several vaults. A former jail cell was also preserved and used as one wall for a bathroom.
City leaders said they're pleased with how it turned out.
"This building has sat vacant for a number of years and to turn it over and have a great, new vibrant use in the downtown area is very exciting," City of Wausau Community Developing Director.
About half of the lofts have been rented so far with 18 of them being income-restricted.
It has taken crews about a year to transform the building into an apartment complex.
