A Marathon County man has been found not guilty on all charges against him in a sex assault trial.
Prosecutors alleged Taj Jefferson, 39, had sex with one of his students several times in 2009. Court records show Jefferson owned Gymsport Gymnastics in Weston.
The verdict came down Friday afternoon after a four-day trial. The end of this case has been four years in the making.
Today, the jury found him not guilty on all six counts.
When the verdict came down in Marathon County court today, emotions were high.
Throughout the trial, the defense argued that the 16-year-old girl's story was inconsistent. That's what Jefferson's attorney told the jury during closing arguments.
"She lied at the preliminary hearing and she lied to you this week. The accusations made against Taj Jefferson are false," James Connell, Jefferson's defense attorney said.
But the prosecution says taking this case to court was the right decision.
"I would never prosecute a case unless I believed there was evidence to prove it beyond a reasonable doubt. But it is always ultimately for the jury to decide," Deputy District Attorney Theresa Wetzsteon told Newsline 9.
Jefferson and his family did not want to comment immediately after the decision. But his attorney tells Newsline 9 the Jefferson's are glad justice has been served. He says the family is looking forward to putting all of this behind them.
