Wisconsin will hold its first winter free fishing weekend, January 19-20, 2013. It is a chance for both residents and non-residents to check out fishing in the state at no cost. No licenses or trout stamps are needed. You can fish on any lake or river.
Wisconsin traditionally offers free fishing during the warm weather months (the first Saturday and Sunday in June) and the free winter weekend was set up uner Act 168, a law passed to boost fishing, hunting and other outdoor activities in the state.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website reports there is growing interest in the fishing. The DNR says about 591,000 Wisconsinites over the age of 16 have enjoyed ice fishing.
For those interested in using loaner gear the DNR has a map of available locations.
