Spencer gets $25,000 in weed killer lawsuit

The Village of Spencer will receive $25,000 as part of a $105 million settlement against the maker of weed killer.

Village Trustee Dianne Gilbert says Spencer Waterworks will receive $25,604.47 to help reimburse the cost to remove the weed killer known as atrazine from the water system. The class action lawsuit was filed against Syngenta, which is based in Switzerland.

Gilbert says atrazine is sprayed on corn and other crops and frequently runs off of fields and into waterways used as drinking water sources.

Spencer Waterworks is one of 1,085 water systems that will be paid as part of the settlement.
