Chicago warehouse encased in ice after fire

CHICAGO (WAOW) - A Chicago warehouse is encased in ice after firefighters put out the city's largest fire in recent history.

The Bridgeport warehouse was destroyed Tuesday when the blaze broke out around 9:00 p.m.

Approximately one-third of all Chicago firefighters were on the scene at one point or another trying to put out the flames at the vacant furniture warehouse.

Firefighters eventually did contain the fire after battling brutal conditions, including the frigid weather. Fire crews fought the blaze overnight and were still trying to put out hot spots during the day Wednesday.

The fire burned through roof and caused some of the floors to collapse.

Fire officials say, as far as they know, no one was inside the warehouse but they say they cannot be sure until they pick apart the building.

One firefighter was injured when he slipped on some ice but he is expected to be okay.

Officials are concerned that what's left of the building could collapse.
