The World Championship Snowmobile Derby was last weekend in Eagle River. Now there is only a five day turnaround before the Wausau 525 Championship.
Wausau local Matt Schulz says that preparations begin in the garage. "We tore the sled all apart, I rebuilt the motor and just getting ready to get out on the test track here, make some laps and break some new belts."
Not everyone gets the home field advantage. Travis Macdonald is from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Him and the rest of his crew have traveled to town in anticipation for this weekend. "There's really nothing up in Canada and all the big fastest racers come to these events and we want to be a part of that, we want to be one of those fast racers that are competitive. And in the big leagues."
The races in Eagle River last weekend banged up a lot more than just the sleds. MacDonald says it's better than last year. "I'm OK, I have a little sore knee, a lot better than last year, I crashed and I didn't remember anything and we came here, I could hardly move my arm"
As the aches and pains fade away, they're looking forward to the newest and safest track.
MacDonald says, "we are going fast speeds, we don't' have road cages, so if you fall off and hit the bails, it's scary still but especially Ralph, they do an amazing job of keeping us as safe as possible."
