UPDATE: Portage Co. man killed in crash identified

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) -  Rick Walters, 31, of the Town of Hull in Portage County, died Friday when the car he was riding in went out of control on a snow-slick highway and slammed into a guardrail,  the Portage County Sheriff's Department said.

The 23-year-old driver, Emalee Nuessmeier, was taken to a hospital, Sheriff John Charewicz said. Her injuries were not life threatening, the sheriff said.

"Excessive speed for the adverse weather conditions is considered to be the primary factor in the cause of the crash," Charewicz said.

The crash happened about 1:00 p.m. on Interstate 39 near Stevens Point, closing one northbound lane for about two hours, authorities said.
